Abstract This paper describes Smartmaps, an applet, which provides users with an overview of all activities in shared information spaces like shared file systems, Web sites, or shared workspaces in a treemap. The treemap is constructed from the shared artifacts, links from the Smartmap to the artifacts are established, and actions on artifacts result in color coding of the respective part of the Smartmap. This presentation of activity enables activity-based navigation and helps in becoming aware of potential collaborators and advice giving experts. The Smartmap is dynamically recreated, when the underlying information space changes. Moreover Smartmaps can be integrated into the information spaces itself to build social spaces.
